Cruden, Alexander
(1701–70)
   Educator.
   Cruden was born in Aberdeen. A strict Presbyterian, he was extremely dedicated to the study of the Bible. In 1737 he published his famous Concordance to the Old and New Testaments which has remained a standard work ever since. Cruden’s life was marked by considerable eccentricity. After the publication of the Concordance, he set himself up as a regulator of public morals, calling himself ‘Alexander the Corrector’. He was particularly exercised about swearing and breaking the Sabbath. In 1755, while wooing the daughter of the Lord Mayor of London, he even petitioned Parliament for the title to be bestowed officially. Unfortunately he was unsuccessful on both counts. None the less the Concordance remains a very useful reference volume.
